When I awoke this morning
You were beside me in our bed
You looked so sweet and so harmless
But then my heart began to dread
As I remembered the last moments
Of a seemingly endless night
I'm amazed that I'm still living
You had beat me with all your might.

When I awoke this morning
A nurse was standing by my bed
I looked so bad from your last beating
I almost wished that I were dead
But then my heart quickly remembered
My little ones crying out in fear
Now I have to find a safe place
To take my kids when I leave here.

When I awoke this morning
My mom was standing by my bed
She said that you were coming over
And that you sounded very mad
But then I quickly remembered
About a safe place we could go
So I fled with my children
To a place we did not know.

When I awoke this morning
My children were beside me in the bed
They weren't crying and fearful
But quietly playing instead
Then I suddenly remembered
I was safe and unafraid
I'd found a shelter for my family
And strength to face another day.

When I awoke this morning
All alone in my bed
I remembered the hard times briefly
But lingered on the good instead
I have found a new home for us
Free from violence and fear
And everyday I'm truly thankful
That there was help so very near.
